Does anyone know how they knew what the world looked like before satillites.?

I am a fan of the Universal monster movies of the 30s and 40s. I noticed how accurate the world looks, so I was wondering how they knew it looked that way. Thanks for anyone who can answer this question. I have searched the web but I’m not wording the right way.
