Discovery carrying a robot for the ISS
The Discovery will be carrying a robot called Robonaut 2, to the orbiting lab in the space. It will also be used as a platform to conduct research, on developing better robots that can help humans in future. Robonaut 2 or simply R2 is a prototype robot designed to assist humans. Director of NASA’s Exploration Systems Integration office, John Olson said, “This project exemplifies the promise that a future generation of robots can have both in space and on Earth, not as replacements for humans but as companions that can carry out hey supporting roles.”
Robonaut 2 will be the first humanoid robot in space
Robonaut 2, which resembles a training kit of a boxer, will be the first humanoid robot in space. It is 3 feet 4 inches tall and weighs around 330 pounds. It is jointly developed by NASA and US car maker, General Motors. The aim of this is to develop robotic assistants which can work with humans, whether in space or at Earth, more specifically at the GM plants. R2 is made of steel and aluminum with five cameras in its head, which includes an infrared camera in the mouth. This camera provides stereo vision and depth perception. The upper body of the robot houses 38 power PC processors. It also carries a backpack in which it can carry batteries or power conversion system. The robot can carry up to 20 pounds in each arm and its hands have artificial figures and thumbs, which allow it to use the same tools that are used by the astronauts.
