Many science fiction and horror movies and comic books spawn toys relating to those titles. A very popular movie figure turned toy figure is Godzilla. First introduced in Japan in the 1950s, Godzilla has attained a worldwide cult following. Japan is the birthplace of Godzilla, a giant fictional monster created by atomic radiation. The first movie, Gojira, as the character’s name is spelled in its original language, was released in 1954. U.S. viewers got their first taste of the giant dinosaur-like creature when they experienced an edited version of that film in 1956. Over the years, the giant lizard has appeared in 28 movies. In 1996, Godzilla even won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV Movie Awards for his overall contributions to pop culture.
The term Godzilla is really a combination of two Japanese words, gorira meaning gorilla and kujira meaning whale. His physical appearance has changed to some extent over time and yet his basic features have continued to be mostly identical. He bears a strong likeness to an ancient dinosaur consisting of rough, gray scales, dorsal fins on his rear, and a very long prestigious tail. His roar has also remained identical with the exception of some slight changes in pitch in different reproductions on the motion pictures. Hundreds of toys, games and figures in Godzilla’s likeness have been created.
